Video synthesizers afford artists the ability to have complete control over what happens on a screen. They also allow for that control to be relinquished systematically. Entropy Backwards, created for the fall 2023 showing of Black Box, is an exploration of this idea.

Video synthesizers do not just have to be played live. They can be recorded too and that makes them perfect for creating music videos. The two below were done combining traditional animation with all-analog hardware.

Video synthesizers are played live, just like musical instruments. When the two are combined in a live setting, performers on each have the chance to react to each other in spontaneous and novel ways, further linking the sonic and visual aspects of music.
